EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
